Aid For Orphans :: Ukrainian Baby Homes
Sewing for Orphans in Ukrainian Baby Homes Have a heart for service? If you have a sewing machine and can spare a few hours, you can be a blessing to a Ukrainian orphan child. One of our goals at The Diaper Hyena™ is to support the bonding relationship between mother and child, but not every baby is born into the arms of a loving mother or with a layette of cloth diapers and clothing awaiting their arrival. These are the babies that are etched in our minds - halfway across the world and yet, held close in our hearts.
Babies are dressed in easy-to-change "feetie" overalls tied behind the neck or at the shoulders for quick changes when needed.
Ukrainian Baby Homes :: Located in the Ukraine cities of Kramatorsk and Kherson, you will find the Antoshka and Kherson orphanages. These orphanages are home to approximately 100 to 180 poorly dressed and malnourished babies and toddlers ages 0 - 4 years.

As is the case in most children's homes in Ukraine, the children here suffer from a shortage of formula, food, diapers, clothing and medicine as the orphanage is poorly funded by the state.

The babies in these Ukraine orphanages are typically dressed in easy-to-change overalls made from flannel, heavy cotton or lightweight denim. The overalls look like feetie onesies with ties at the shoulders or behind the neck. The overalls are worn with a short or long-sleeve shirt underneath, dependant on the season.

Because of the shortage of good quality diapers and until the babies are toilet trained, these outfits are changed regularly throughout the day. As can be imagined with a house full of babies, the orphanages' care-givers go through many of these baby overalls every day.

------------------------------

Filling the need :: Right now there are 230 children at the two orphanages. With a minimum of 4 changes per day, per child, the caregivers at these orphanages would need close to 1000 overalls per day IF THEY WERE TO WASH DAILY.

As you can see, their drying facilities are limited, so they would likely need 2 or 3 days worth to get them from laundry day to laundry day.

What can you do? :: Glad you asked! Below (at right) you will find the links to download a simple pattern and directions for the one-piece overalls the children in these Ukrainian baby homes wear. As explained earlier, these overalls have 'feet' and simple ties at the top for ease of taking on and off - making caring after the babies and toddlers easier. They do not involve sewing button holes or working with snaps or zippers.

The preferable materials for these items are flannel, fleece, heavy cotton or lightweight denim to withstand the wear and tear of regular usage and numerous washings by an industrial machine.

Requirements :: The following fabric requirements are not included in the Baby Overall Pattern Instructions download at right. This one-size pattern calls for:
  • 1/2 yard if working with 60" fabric and 3/4 yard if 45" fabric.
  • 2.5 yards bias tape (Narrow width is suitable, but wide width is best. CLICK HERE for add'l directions on making your own bias tape.)
  • Thread suitable for sewing/serging (cotton suggested)
  • Flannelette, heavy cotton, lightweight denims suggested. (Natural fabrics are best for moisture absorption and the extreme heat required to meet the laundering regulations - knit and fabric blends are often not suitable.)
Fabric Donations Needed! :: Do you have or work for a fabric store? Do you have gently used flannel baby blankets no longer needed? Do you know of a place where we can find 'seconds' that will work for this cause. PLEASE contact Aid For Orphans or mail them by downloading the pre-printed address forms found here.

Brilliant Baby Overalls :: Here are a few samples of baby overalls sewn by one of the Aid for Orphans sewing supporters. As you can see, fabric choices can range from pastel to bright and fabric selections shown below are 100% cotton.

This is an ongoing need as the overalls will wear out and require replacement. If this is a need that you can fulfill feel free to download the pattern and instructions below. If you do not have the current version of Adobe Reader, go here for a FREE download.
